It is a bit
of a generalisation, but we can say that there are two kinds of people, those
who already need correction and those who will need it at some point in the
future.
There is no such thing as perfect vision. It depends on the environment,
circumstance, and the immediate surroundings. To have good sight means the
complete opposite for a sailor, than for a watchmaker. In the same way, in our
lifetime our visual requirements as well as our bodies change constantly.
But there is good and unencumbered vision that suits you, your surroundings and
your lifestyle. Mankind has never accepted this complacently and we has come a
long way in the possibilities of improving or doing away with obstacles to
clear vision.
We collect
75% of information about the world surrounding us through our eyes and today
our eyes are more vulnerable than ever to the demands and dangers of civilized
life. Our lifestyle, diet and our changed surroundings all place new demands on
our bodies and our eyes may not be able to cope.
Increased
time spent indoors, relying on artificial light
* Time spent looking at close objects: reading, computer screens, TV, video
games
* Improved diet has actually increased the number of people with short sight
* Increased importance of night vision (e.g. for driving)
* Living longer means more of us will need reading glasses
There are several alternatives for the future of vision correction. Today new,
foldable and injectable lens implants (IOLs) are being tested. There are also
self-adjusting or adjustable glasses in development.
Even now phakic lens implants, multifocal lenses and wavefront designed
lenses are the fastest growing area of refractive surgery as laser eye surgeons
realise the limits of laser eye surgery and how much better the
quality of vision can be with a lens implant.
In the
future (10-15 yrs) we expect to use smart lenses which adapt to each individual
and that can be modified without surgery. The purpose of the surgery is to make
it less likely that you will need to wear spectacles or contact lenses. No
surgery is risk free. If there is any aspect of the documentation that you do
not understand, please ask your Consultant before deciding if you wish to have
the treatment. We also provide a list of consultation topics to make sure you
receive the most comprehensive information you need.We appreciate that people
can forget something they may have wanted to ask or think of new things after
their consultation. Please don't hesitate to call if this happens.
There is no
obligation to proceed to surgery after the consultation. We will send reports
to your General Practitioner to keep them informed unless you ask us not to.
It is
essential that you feel that you have had time to consider our advice prior to
any treatment. We therefore prefer not to offer consultation and surgery on the
same day. We understand that there may be travel or other reasons, but in any
case you are asked to leave the Centre at least for a few hours to consider the
surgeon’s advice. A further report is sent to your GP at the conclusion of
treatment.
